James 4:13-17 NASB
Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that." But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
(A) Asking graduates what their plans are (B) To fail to plan is to plan to fail (C) To fail to seek God's plan is to plan to fail (D) Walk without God- ahead of God- behind God or with God
Today I want to challenge us to seek God's will rather than our self will
Foolish Planning is to Plan with No Thought of GOD'S WILL
James 4:13 NASB
Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit."
Living as if God does not EXIST
Psalm 10:4, Psalm 14:1 NASB
The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, does not seek Him. All his thoughts are, "There is no God." The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good.
It is acting like you CONTROL your future
Proverbs 27:1 NASB
Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.
Thinking your plan is BEST
Isaiah 55:8-9 NASB
"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," declares the Lord. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.
Foolish Planning is Plans with No Thought of the UNCERTAINTY of Life
James 4:14 NASB
Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.
Plan like you will live forever and live like you only TODAY
Luke 12:16-21 NASB
And He told them a parable, saying, "The land of a rich man was very productive. And he began reasoning to himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' Then he said, 'This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry."' But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?' So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."
In comparison to ETERNITY our life span is a blink of the eye
Psalm 31:14-15 NASB
But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord, I say, "You are my God." My times are in Your hand; Deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me.
Foolish Planning is OVERCOME By Seeking God's Will
James 4:15 NASB
Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that."
How do you REACT when God changes your plans?
2 Corinthians 10:17-18 NASB
But he who boasts is to boast in the Lord. For it is not he who commends himself that is approved, but he whom the Lord commends.
Doing God's will is an act of WORSHIP
Romans 12:1-2 NASB
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
It should be a WAY OF LIFE
Colossians 1:9-10 NASB
For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
"A strong desire to do the will of God is a sure mark of a transformed life" -John MacArthur
Foolish Planning PUTS OFF Doing God's Will
James 4:16-17 NASB
But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
TOMORROW is the killer of doing God's will
To put off God's will is to HARDEN your heart
2 Corinthians 6:2, Hebrews 3:7-8, Hebrews 3:15-19 NASB
for He says, "At the acceptable time I listened to you, And on the day of salvation I helped you." Behold, now is "the acceptable time," behold, now is "the day of salvation"- Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, "Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me, As in the day of trial in the wilderness, while it is said, "Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts, as when they provoked Me." For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.
